Hello everyone, I'm Cecilia. Today, I'd like to share a tank model with you — the Leopard 2A4.

When it comes to the Leopard 2A4, I'm sure it's a familiar name to anyone interested in military vehicles and armored warfare. As one of the most iconic main battle tanks in Germany's Leopard 2 series, the Leopard 2A4 was not only an important part of Europe's armored forces during the late Cold War, but also continued the Leopard 2 series' classic design philosophy of seeking a balance between firepower, protection, and mobility. Its low and wide hull, sharply angled turret, distinctive 120 mm smoothbore gun, and highly detailed running gear and suspension system together form the characteristic silhouette of the Leopard 2A4. Even those who are not particularly familiar with tanks can easily appreciate the sense of power conveyed by its heavy hull and unmistakable turret profile.
Precisely because of these distinctive structural features, the Leopard 2A4 has always been an excellent subject for scale modeling. Its extensive armor surfaces, complex mechanical structures, and abundance of external equipment provide plenty of room for detailed reproduction in a brick-built model. Compared with the roaring steel beasts seen charging across battlefields in movies and television, a main battle tank weighing several dozen tons takes on an entirely different character when it is scaled down to desktop size and assembled piece by piece by hand. The once-distant world of armored machinery suddenly becomes something you can hold in your hands and experience up close.
So, how does this Leopard 2A4 model actually perform as a whole? What should you pay attention to during the building process? Let's take a closer look and find out.

1. Box and Packaging

2. Building Process

Bag No. 1 contains six sub-bags.


I first opened bag [1.22] to assemble the tank's base plate. 


This stage also requires parts from an unnumbered bag. I noticed that two panel pieces in this parts bag were slightly deformed. Fortunately, after assembly, they did not have a significant impact on the overall structural integrity, and there was no noticeable effect on the appearance of the finished model.



The completed base plate is neatly assembled, with the sections fitting together cleanly.


I then opened bags [23.57-1] and [23.57-2] in sequence.


At Step 57, I installed the completed engine assembly onto the chassis.



Next, I opened bag [58.81] and officially began building the internal compartment framework of the hull. As the various partitions were gradually added, the interior slowly became more layered and detailed.



I then continued with bags [82.107-1] and [82.107-2].


At Step 87, the turret ring is simply placed into position and does not require any clips or locking mechanism to secure it. By Step 107, the overall shape of the hull interior had begun to take form, and the outline of the driver's compartment could already be seen.


After completing all the sections in Bag No. 1, I moved on to Bag No. 2, which contains four sub-bags.


I first opened bag [108.127].




Next, I opened bag [128.153].


The first obvious issue appeared during the building process at step 151. I found that some of the holes in the parts were oversized, resulting in inconsistent fit and varying levels of tightness. 
Some parts were so loose after installation that they would come off with the slightest touch. I had to test-fit the parts one by one and select the ones with the best fit before installing them in position.



I then opened bag [154.157].


I first assembled all of the suspension and road wheels before installing them onto the hull one by one.



Finally, I opened bag [158] to assemble the tracks.


The instruction manual still includes 1:1 scale diagrams for comparison.


According to the instructions, I assembled the tracks using the recommended 93 links. However, after completing the installation, I found that the tracks were slightly too tight, putting noticeable pressure on the suspension wheels and causing some deformation in the suspension-wheel structure.



To achieve a better overall appearance, I decided to add one additional track link, increasing the total to 95 links. After this adjustment, the track tension felt much more appropriate. When displayed statically, the tracks looked naturally relaxed rather than overly tight.

However, another issue appeared when I pushed the model to make it move. The tracks tended to shift continuously during operation. After taking a closer look, I found that the suspension-wheel structure itself was not secured firmly enough. During movement, the suspension wheels could shift out of position, which in turn caused the tracks to move sideways and eventually come off. This part of the design could definitely benefit from further structural optimization.



Once the entire track system was installed, the tank immediately gained a strong military presence, and the main chassis was essentially complete.


Next came Bag No. 3, which contains four sub-bags.


I first opened bag [159.190] and began assembling the upper hull armor panels, gradually closing off the upper structure of the vehicle.



I then opened bag [191.216]to complete the upper armor panels on the opposite side. As the armor on both sides of the hull came together, the overall model gained significantly more depth and definition.



Next, I opened bag [217.243]. This stage also requires parts from the included hand-pack bag.



When I reached the chain structure in Step 220, the instructions called for 21 clips. However, after completing the assembly, I found that using all 21 clips made the chain noticeably too long. It looked loose and somewhat slack, which was quite different from the result shown in the instructions.



I therefore adjusted the design to use 17 clips instead. After the adjustment, the chain had much better proportions and matched the appearance shown in the instructions more closely, resulting in a cleaner and more refined overall look.


By Step 243, I had completed the rear deck. The Leopard 2's distinctive dual circular cooling-grille covers were also installed, completely enclosing and concealing the engine compartment beneath the outer shell.
One feature that deserves particular praise is the opening rear deck. It can be opened at any time, providing a clear view of the detailed engine structure inside. The level of detail and effort put into recreating the internal components is impressive.



I then opened bag [244.269] to continue refining the hull.


The side-deck armor panels were extended toward the front, followed by the installation of the front armor shell and orange marker lights. The front of the tank became fuller and more structured, while the overall hull silhouette looked increasingly solid and three-dimensional.



Next came Bag No. 4, which contains five sub-bags.


I first opened bag [270.307] to assemble the side-skirt sections.


At Step 276, I noticed that one part was missing. I checked the parts bags repeatedly, wondering if I had accidentally overlooked it. Fortunately, the set includes enough spare parts, so I was able to use a spare without waiting for a replacement, allowing the build to continue without any interruption.


This stage completed the installation of the front armor and the side-skirt structures on both sides. The tank's strong and complete hull shape finally took form, with clean lines and clearly defined layers of armor.



I then opened bag [308.331] and officially began assembling the turret. I first built the basic lower framework of the turret, laying the foundation for the internal components and outer shell that would follow.



Next, I opened bag [332.354] to assemble the internal compartments of the turret.


As the build progressed, the gun mechanism base, internal dividing walls, and other structures gradually took shape, establishing the basic functional layout of the turret interior.



I continued with bag [355.374] to further develop the internal components, raising the compartment dividers and securing the ammunition blocks in place. The turret interior became increasingly detailed and substantial.



I then opened bag [375.399] to assemble the outer armor on both sides of the turret. The armor gradually enclosed the turret framework, and the external silhouette of the turret slowly began to take shape.




Finally, I moved on to Bag No. 5, which contains five sub-bags.


I first opened bag [400.424].


At Step 414, I noticed a fairly obvious issue with the illustration in the instruction manual. When following the small diagram, it becomes clear that the position indicated by the arrow is not correct.



At Step 424, I encountered another issue. When following the assembly sequence in the manual, I found that part of the structure from Step 363 could easily shift out of position, which eventually prevented the pieces from being pressed into place properly.


After repeatedly disassembling and reassembling the parts, I found a better solution: remove the relevant structure from Step 363, install it onto the module from Step 423 in advance, and then attach the entire module to the model.



I opened bag [425.445] to continue the assembly.



I then opened bag [446.462].


At Step 458, I encountered another missing-part issue. Fortunately, I had enough spare parts of my own to replace it, so the overall building progress was not affected.


This stage completed the circular turret-ring module and the simulated ammunition. The turret interior was now fully assembled, with the silver simulated shells arranged neatly inside. The ammunition compartment and gun mechanism were recreated in considerable detail, making the interior particularly impressive.



Finally, I opened bags [463.504-1] and [463.504-2] to assemble the turret hatches.


At Step 477, I noticed a difference between the illustration in the manual and the result of my actual assembly. At first, I suspected that I might have made a mistake earlier in the build, so I went back through the previous steps and checked them one by one.
After carefully reviewing everything, I confirmed that the difference was mainly caused by the illustration in the manual not being sufficiently precise, resulting in some visual deviation for reference.


By Step 503, all of the turret structures had finally been completed. I carefully connected the finished turret to the hull's turret ring, officially completing the entire Leopard 2A4 building model.



3. Overall Evaluation

Overall, this Leopard 2A4 model performs particularly well in terms of its overall appearance and finished quality. The low and wide hull, angular turret, and long gun barrel successfully capture the classic silhouette of the Leopard 2A4. The rich structural details and selected metallic-painted parts further enhance the model's mechanical character.
In terms of playability, the turret can rotate, the gun barrel can be adjusted slightly, and some sections can be removed. These features add a certain level of interaction for both display and hands-on use.



However, the actual building process also revealed several areas that could be improved, including some deformed panels, differences in certain part-hole positions, missing parts at a few steps, and discrepancies between some instruction illustrations and the actual structure. Among these issues, the track and suspension system is the most noticeable. The tracks can still shift during movement, which affects the model's stability when being driven. Therefore, from a practical-use perspective, this model may be better suited as a static display piece.
Overall, the main strengths of this model lie in its overall shape, mechanical appearance, and display quality. At the same time, there is still room for improvement in terms of part fit, instruction accuracy, and structural stability.
For builders who enjoy the Leopard 2A4, modern main battle tanks, and mechanical building sets, this model offers a highly attractive finished appearance. However, builders may need to make some adjustments based on the actual fit of the parts during assembly.
In conclusion, the model deserves recognition for its overall appearance and shape accuracy, while some of the finer details could still be refined. Overall, the finished model makes a strong visual impression, although there is still room for further improvement in terms of detail and structural design. It is ultimately better suited for static display.
